I just don't understand this.....

How is it that, no matter what the hour or day, I can always find the show "Reba" on Country Music Television? I'm not just talking about it being on once or twice a day -- it's constant!

Am I missing something? I mean, I'm sure it's not a TERRIBLE show or anything (all I see is little bits here and there, but have never watched a full episode), but how many episodes could they have possibly produced for it to be every waking hour?

The Office Line Of The Night

(Okay, so this was probably the first one of the season, but I hadn't seen it yet).

It's either:

"I wish you would estimate me, Jan."

or

"I hope it's urine."

Not the best of episodes, but still some solid moments...

(And yet ANOTHER Office cross-over tonight. Was watching a rerun of Curb Your Enthusiasm on Showcase, and the orderly was Darryl. Awesome...)

Jeff Jarrett's Wife Loses Battle With Cancer

http://www.pwbts.com/messages/9175.htm

Not much to add, other than to say this is obviously very sad news. I had read somewhere these were the "personal reasons" under which Jeff had taken time off for some time ago. Condolences to the entire Jarrett family...

Judgment Day Thoughts

So without my PPV posse in tow, I headed to the theatre last night to check this one out. However, I did win a prize in the post-show trivia contest: A WWE "One Night Stand" kit, which consisted of a leather pouch with the WWE logo on it (guaranteeing that I will never ACTUALLY use it during a real one-night stand), toothpaste, a comb, mouthwash, etc. I remember the days when you just won DVD's.... not to mention that One Night Stand is in two weeks from now, not tonight.

Anyways, the show was pretty decent, and has to make them feel good about unifying the three brands every month on PPV. Not a lot of time-filler here, and most of the matches got a decent amount of time to tell their story.

Ric Flair vs. Carlito: Obviously, they're still punishing Carlito for his pre-WM comments, but at least Flair was made to look like a legend in one of the cities he starred in decades ago. And the match was actually a good effort on the part of both guys.

Bobby Lashley vs. Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and Umaga: Meh, but it was kept really short. I suppose the idea is for Lashley to face Vince now at Not ECW One Night Stand. So from that standpoint, it worked. Just sucks to be Umaga right now, is all.

CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke: This one was surprisingly good, and I'm glad WWE gave so much PPV time to let this one develop. A lot of false finishes there, and yet the right guy definitely won. Now, its just a matter of dissolving ECW and letting Punk go to SmackDown (Burke, too, for that matter).

The Hardyz vs. Cade and Murdoch: I am quickly becoming a Cade and Murdoch fan, and not because of this ultra-lame "respect" angle. They're actually developing into a nice old-school team. Would have liked to see them win, though, so they could have done the blowoff match at the next PPV (and they may still if they do a decent angle tonight on Raw).

Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton: This was more an angle than it was a bonafide match, but it was played out really well. Hell, if Orton is the only credible heel they have left on Raw, might as well make him look like a total dick. And having Shawn Michaels' wife run out was a nice touch.... but it would have made MORE sense had the event been even remotely near where they live, you know?

Batista vs. Edge: I would have rather seen this one end inconclusively, rather than Edge getting a clean pinfall (or at least through Sexual Chocolate-ference), but both these guys put on a decent show. Hell, looking at Batista's last few PPV appearances, he's on quite the streak of being in "better than expected" matches. Oh, and yes -- I did hear Edge saying "EVER!!!" in the pre-match promo. Another point for the Bulldog....

Chris Benoit vs. MVP: Another in a series of fantastic matches between these guys. This was the very definition of Benoit putting young talent over, especially losing in two straight falls. Yet JBL continued to put Benoit over on the mike, which leads me to believe that either he's going to turn heel soon (which is actually overdue) or MVP's turning face. Regardless, though, GREAT match.

John Cena vs. Great Khali: I read some of the message board comments this morning, mostly from people who just saw the result and crapped all over it. But it was a GOOD match. Not in the traditional sense of, say, Benoit-MVP, but for what it was, both guys did their jobs really well. It reminded me of a Hulk Hogan match from the 80's, actually, the way Cena was against overwhelming odds and still came through in the clutch. Also, Khali did NOT suck out there, especially with that one roundhouse kick he delivered. Yeah, so he tapped out at the end. So what? It wasn't like many people were expecting him to win the match, was it? It may have been nicer had Khali won by countout, setting up a rematch (another old Hogan formula), but then you would have all crapped over the rematch. It does look like we're going to have Cena-Orton at SummerSlam ("Two years too late"), but that's more a function of injuries more than anything else.

The Office Line Of The Night

"Your advice was good, hers was bigger."

What an AWESOME season finale! Between Creed's blog, Schrute bucks (and of course Stanley nickels), Pam as Secret Assistant to the Regional Manager, Angela's silent support of the new boss, Jan's wild mood swings and the way that the CFO handled the interviews, this may have been the best episode this season.

Unfortunately, I have this funny feeling that Jim and Pam having a "date" will mean something else come the beginning of the new season. Maybe that they're just friends again, which would blow. I guess I was wrong on my prediction of Karen moving to NYC, but the eventual pick was a nice little surprise....

Why, Bulldog, Why?

To answer the two questions I've been asked, oh, at least a dozen times since yesterday's column hit: NO, this is not a work (though I have said that before and look what happened). And it has absolutely nothing to do with any "falling out" with Online Onslaught or Rick Scaia. So here's the deal...

I've been writing Inside The Ropes for four years, and it just got to the point where, largely, it wasn't fun anymore.

At the beginning, I could sit in front of the computer for half an hour and bang out ITR rather effortlessly ("that's what she said" -- sorry, had to say it). As I added more features and "matured" the column slightly, it took a bit longer to complete, but was always a lot of fun to work on. I don't mind spending time on something if, in the end, it still makes me chuckle.

Then in the last year, things became different. Part of it was the WWI gig, no doubt. Another part of it was keeping busier in general, with more of a social life and my day job has become more demanding. But even when those distractions weren't there, writing up ITR was no longer fun -- it became almost a burden.

I would sit at the computer screen for literally an hour, picking at the tiniest of ideas and then scrapping it, or doing a complete re-write. And in the run-up to WrestleMania -- which is usually my favorite time to write ITR-related columns -- I just wasn't feeling it. I decided that I had to cut either OO or WWI out for the time being, and I still have a lot more ideas for "Breaking News"/"True Wrestling Stories". ITR was becoming largely just a re-hash of things I'd already done.

I'm glad to say that, unlike WWE, Online Onslaught really DOES wish me the best in future endeavours, and that my exit was treated with the utmost respect. I told Rick just a few weeks ago that if I could think of another project -- one that doesn't take up ridiculous amounts of time on a regular basis -- I'd still love to contribute to his site. But that doesn't seem to be in the cards right now.

So "Canadian Bulldog" lives; he's just going to a lighter schedule (I ALMOST made an analogy of going from WWE to TNA, but I don't want to diss WWI like that).

Having said all that, I really appreciate everyone's feedback and comments, and of course, thank you all for reading. Inside The Ropes had a great run, and I'm happy it lasted as long as it did.

THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT!!!

The Final ITR Ever! EVER!!!

(Bulldog's Note: I'll have more to say about this soon....)

Canadian Monkey?
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times... and now, Canadian Bulldog is going to a far better rest than he has ever known before. Or something like that. Look at OO getting all Dickensian on you! With a twist of Mr. Burns thrown in. Anyway, what many of you don't know is that Bulldog is actually a University trained and certified writer who makes his living at wordsmithing. And on top of that, he's spent four years here at OO displaying an almost pathological lack of knowledge about wrestling. Which qualifies him perfectly for one job above all others. As a result, Bulldog is leaving OO to become a Monkey. A Writer Monkey. Or at least that's his story, and he's sticking to it in the final Inside the Ropes EVER.

Let's see how long this keeps up....

So I've decide to take a "Learn To Run" course, starting tonight. It's literally down the road from my apartment, and it seems painless enough. According to the program's description:

Our goal is to have you able to run for 20 minutes by the end of this clinic with a gradual progression of run and walk breaks.

Now.... I don't know if I'll ever be able to get to 20 minutes, especially after only 10 weeks of instruction. But definitely, it's worth a shot.... Wish me luck!

Latest ITR (RDH! RDH! RDH!)

The Re-Letterring

So. You think the Canadian Bulldog retired his beloved "Letters from a Nut" gimmick last year. Well, you're right. But just cuz Bulldog stopped scribing letters under his 100% Genuine Legal Name doesn't stop him from creating an entire multi-layered scam in which he was named "Brad Slater" and was in charge of a new wrestling company called RDH. Once you've got a fake name and a fake wrestling company, you might as well write real letters to real wrestlers to see if they're desperate enough that they'll come work for you! As a result of this, Alex Shelley is now a fully endorsed OO Favorite for reasons OTHER than hanging out with The Master, Kevin Nash. Get all the RDH goodness in the latest Inside The Ropes.

Raw Thoughts

Wow - how long has it been when there's been more than one thing on Raw I've wanted to comment on?

-- I realize this is a Canada-only issue, but why on earth does Raw start at 9:15 p.m. these days? In other words, what's with the 15 minute infomercial/recap we're subjected to on The Score? Honestly - is it helpful to anyone to know what, say, Carlito did last week on Raw? It's not as though they won't recap it ANYWAYS later in the show....

-- If WWE is smart, they'll have Edge cash in his Money In The Bank shot this week on SmackDown and defeat either Taker or Batista for the title. Hell, it's not as though they haven't done the EXACT same thing with the EXACT same wrestler before -- it makes them look consistent, even if the move was likely arranged because of Kennedy's injury. Regardless, SmackDown needs a main event heel BADLY. Edge is probably the only person that would make me watch SmackDown again on a regular basis. Plus with Taker and Kennedy on the shelf for the next little while (and is King Booker injured as well? Can't recall), Edge coming aboard would make perfect, perfect sense. Plus... you could main event SD with a Batista-Edge feud for a while (which someone, I can't remember who) suggested as a great little WrestleMania matchup earlier this year. THEN.... you have Edge-Taker and Edge-Kennedy feuds once they heal up.

--What the fuck was up with that Cryme Tyme sketch? Did they REALLY need to waste time on that?

-- I'm getting sick of people knocking Great Khali. Yes, he can't wrestle worth a lick, but so what? He's been booked TREMENDOUSLY, and tonight was no exception. Big John Studd, Kamala and dozens of other "giants" were just as untalented as Khali, yet they're looked at as being more talented in retrospect. Why? For the past few months, they've booked Khali as unstoppable, which actually makes me look forward to Cena-Khali at Judgment Day. Fans WILL rally behind Cena when he's in a situation like this, plus its a classic David vs Goliath story. Crazy booking concept, I know.

-- Along the same lines, Shawn Michaels was his usual brilliant self here, making Khali look like a million bucks.

Overall, a pretty interesting show that makes me optimistic that at least ONE of the three WWE brands might be starting to get it right again...

Film Reviews - "Spider Man 3" and "Are We Done Yet?"

It's been AT LEAST 20 years since I'd been to a drive-in movie (the last time I was, for trivia purposes, was Stephen King's "Firestarter" with a late showing of the Mr. T classic "D.C. Cab". But a combination of really wanting to see this film (Spidey, that is; not "Are We Done Yet?") on opening weekend, really nice pre-summer weather and the need to do something a little different prompted me to head to East Gwillumbury (about 30 minutes north of where I live, but well worth the journey).

The first thing I noticed is that, if they haven't already, someone's going to run over one of the kids running around in the parking lot. Seriously! Between people not knowing where they're going, and kids who were like, playing football and frisbee while vehicles swerve around them in less-than-optimal lighting conditions, it's an accident waiting to happen. I WAS pleased to learn, however, that drive-ins no longer require to hook up audio boxes to your car antenna; it's now as simple as turning to a specific radio station. Amazing how far technology has come in just two decades.

Anyways... the movies. In short, Spider Man 3 didn't quite match what I'd expected from the first two films. There were some great elements here: the trio of villians had a lot going for them, Topher Grace was excellent as upstart photographer/prick Eddie Brock (and later Venom), and Tobey McGuire played emo Peter Parker quite well.

That said, there was just TOO MUCH going on at any given point. Three villians. Two love interests. Peter Parker trying to patch up his relationship, aid his friend and battle his inner demons, often all at once. They could have easily taken one of these subplots (and here I'm thinking Sandman) and saved it for Spider Man 4. The film overall was just a little too ambitious, and it suffered as a result.

Would I recommend it? Sure. As far as comic book movies go, this franchise has been much more consistent than, say, Batman (which had a fantastic debut in 1989 and just fell off the wagon after that, with a few exceptions) or Superman (meh). I just think Sam Raimi could have done better with what he had, especially given that this may end up being the final installment.

As for "Are We Done Yet?", should I really review this one? Shockingly, most of the cars had left by the time this one started, so we were able to move up from the 10th row to, I think, the 2nd or 3rd and get a better view. I guess if you like ultra-predictable family comedies that star Ice T as the perpetually disgruntled head of household, and the guy from Scrubs (forget his name) as the wacky handyman, then you probably won't be terribly disappointed. Otherwise, don't even bother with it on DVD. I'm just waiting for the third installment in this series "Are We Dead Yet?".

Latest ITR

At the Movies...
Why does Ol' Stone Cold look all pissed off? It could be that his movie was savaged by critics (although for some of the most pitiably self-righteous reasons), and raked in an abysmal $4 million last weekend. In terms of Box Office Receipts, that means that Steve Austin has just jobbed to both John Cena and Kane. D'oh. But luckily, we're gearing up for Summer Blockbuster season, and the Canadian Bulldog is here with the inside scOOp on a few other wrestlers who should hit box office gold in the coming months. As is the case with most of the Bulldog's highly reliable investigative work, some of the details may surprise you! Check out his very latest Inside the Ropes.

The Office Line Of The Night

"Angela, I would really just like to buy you a fresh new pair of underwear."

SO many uncomfortable moments, especially with Dwight on perv patrol the entire show. Some more awesome Creed moments, especially his need to use the women's washroom, and how all the guys hung out there was.... odd as well.

I may have missed it because I was distracted, but how did the flasher's picture end up being Dwight with a moustache? Was that when Pam drew the sketch?

Unrelated: Caught "Curb Your Enthusiasm" for the first time in ages on Showcase (A Canadian channel that shows Curb, Entourage and a few other HBO-ish programs). This was the episode -- probably a really old one -- where Some Guy From The Daily Show (forget his name)played a sexual predator who was invited over to the Passover seder. Between Larry's rationale for having him over and the plot to get the doctor to admit he was stealing Larry's newspaper, I miss this show so much and wish it was on here more regularly.....

Catching Up....

So it's been a little while since I've had a chance to write on non-column stuff, so while I have the time and inspiration to do so...

Movies: I caught "Reign Over Me" and "Kickin' It Old Skool" over the past week. The first movie was an interesting concept, but it "reigned" on waaaaaay too long for my liking. I can only take "serious" Adam Sandler in small doses, I guess. "Kickin" was what it was. I was there mainly to support our man Stu and the director, Harv Glazer, who I went to elementary school with. It was silly fun, some great 80's references and for my tastes, a great soundtrack. It won't ever be confused with a cinematic classic, but again, for what it was, I had zero problem with it. Stu even took a nice bump.

Music: I would just like to say that Edge's theme song has become my single favorite song to work out to. That is all.

FitnessBlog: In April, I worked out a grand total of... 18 times. Much better than last month, though to be honest, one of those was my 2.7 mile walk between subway stations after the transit tragedy last week (I Mapquested it), and another was just an early morning walk (probably a mile in total).

And as far as what's to come from me this month, column-wise, let's just say... you might be surprised.
